How to Take a Screenshot

How do I take a screenshot?

If you need to take a screenshot, the method to do so changes depending on your device. You can view specific instructions by clicking the green dropdown arrow below your device type:

  • Mac (Apple) Computer:
    • Full Screen Screenshot
      To take a full screen screenshot, press command, shit, and 3 at the same time. Your computer will capture the entire screen and save it as a file on your desktop which you can then attach to an email.
    • Partial Screenshot
      To take a partial screenshot, press command, shift, and 4 at the same time. You can then use your mouse to draw a rectangle around what you would like to capture. Your computer will also save this as a file. 
  • Windows computer: you have a few options!
    • Full Screen Screenshot
      Press PrtScn on your computer. Some notebooks may require your to press Fn and PrtScn. Windows will capture the entire screen and copy it to your clipboard. You can either copy the image and paste it into an email or save the image and attach it as a file to your email.
    • Partial Screenshot
      If you don’t want the entire screen to be in your image, press the Windows key, shift, and S at the same time. You will see a task bar pop up that allows you to take a screenshot of any size - just drag the cursor around what you would like to capture. You also have the option to take a free-form screenshot where you can outline what you would like to capture. Windows will copy it to your clipboard. You can either copy the image and paste it into an email or save the image and attach it as a file to your email.
  • Android mobile device (smartphone or tablet):
    • Instructions
      At the same time, hold down the volume down button and the power button for 1-2 seconds. The screen will flash and save the entire screen as a photo. You can access your screenshot in your Gallery or Photo app and include it as an attachment in an email.
  • Apple iPhone or iPad:
    • Instructions
      Press the sleep/wake button and the volume up button. The screen will flash and save the entire screen as a photo. You can access your screenshot in your Photos app and include it as an attachment in an email.
  • Chromebook:
    • Full Screen Screenshot
      To take a full screen screenshot, press control and F5 at the same time. Your computer will save the image as a file in your downloads folder.
    • Partial Screenshot
      To take a partial screenshot, press control, shift, and F5 at the same time. Then, use your mouse to draw a rectangle around the content you would like to capture. Your Chromebook will save the file in your downloads folder.
